Chain link is what you use when a lot needs enclosing securely and a finished panel is not worth the money. It fences a side yard, a dog run, or a rear boundary cheaply, in bright galvanized or a black coating that disappears against a hillside behind it.
Where chain link earns its keep
Chain link is a workhorse and never a showpiece, which is exactly why certain Tarzana jobs suit it. Quick to put up, cheaper than any solid fence, and reliable at the single thing asked of it: keeping what is inside in. Its places are the ones nobody puts at the front of a house. Down a side yard for a dog. Around equipment or the trash area. Along a long rear boundary.
That rear boundary deserves its own note. Lots at the edge of the flats and along the lower slopes back onto open space, and the owner usually wants the line marked and secured without a wall standing in front of the hillside. Nothing does that as cheaply as chain link in a black coating. It holds children and pets, keeps the line legible, and reads as almost nothing against the brush behind it.
Galvanized or black vinyl-coated
Look and budget decide it. Both are strong, both last, and the finish is where they part.
- Galvanized. The familiar bright silver mesh, zinc-coated against rust, and the cheapest thing we hang. Right for a utility area, a work yard, or any run where cost outranks appearance.
- Black vinyl-coated. Polymer bonded over the galvanized wire, in black or dark green. It costs a little more, layers a second defense against corrosion, and looks considerably more finished. With a hillside behind it, the black mesh drops out of sight and the view comes through.
Gauge counts as well. Heavier wire and a thicker top rail take the dry canyon winds, and a large dog leaning on the line, better than light mesh does. We size both to the run instead of defaulting to whatever is thinnest.
Privacy slats, and keeping pets in
The open mesh is the whole point, though it need not stay fully open. Vinyl or aluminum slats weave down through the diamonds and block most of the sightline, in colors that suit a galvanized or a black fence, and a wind or shade screen adds shelter over a dog run. None of that makes chain link a privacy wall. Along a patio, where you want real seclusion, wood or vinyl is the answer. Down a side yard, the slats are a cheap upgrade.
Nothing contains a pet more reliably. The mesh gets set close to grade so a digger finds no way under, a bottom tension wire or a buried kick rail goes in where a determined dog works the line, and the height goes up for a jumper. On the sloped lots south of the Boulevard, holding that bottom edge tight against a stepped grade is the detail that actually keeps an animal inside.
Chain link and the Tarzana enclaves
Appearance rules are the one hard limit. The gated view enclaves south of the Boulevard, and plenty of streets on the flats, want a finished material facing the street, meaning wrought iron, block, or a solid panel, and bright chain link is generally not on that list for visible frontage. None of which conflicts with the work chain link exists to do, since that work lives in the side and rear yards anyway. We read your enclave guidelines before quoting so what we propose passes, and where a run might catch an eye we suggest the black coating.
